Hello! I'm Alissa, a classically trained chef who is passionate about teaching people how to cook through methods, techniques and basic science principles. I currently live in San Diego, California with my husband, Steve, and sweet dog, Nina. I love learning about food, eating good food, and cooking good food for my loved ones.

Creating an Ambiance

This is my favorite part of mise en place. Is it not a necessity to become a great cook but it does make cooking more enjoyable. This part of mise en place helps me relax and focus on why I love cooking. My favorite way to create ambiance is to put music on.

I love listening to Jazz in the form of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin. Jazz and cooking are just made for each other! Here is a playlist with some of my favorites.

A few other ways you can create ambiance:

  • Pour yourself a glass of wine
  • Adjust the lighting to create a moody and cozy atmosphere
  • Invite loved ones to cook with you
  • Listen to an audiobook
  • Put on your favorite TV show

I think it’s important to remember to not take cooking too seriously. That’s why I wanted to include this concept as a part of mise en place. As a reminder to enjoy the process.
