Description
A comforting and savory twist on the classic sloppy joe, with rich caramelized onions and gooey Swiss cheese.
Ingredients
- → 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- → 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- → 2 cloves garlic, minced
- → 1 tablespoon olive oil
- → 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- → 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- → 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- → Salt and pepper to taste
- → 4 hamburger buns
- → 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
- → Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until caramelized.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Increase heat to medium-high. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the caramelized onions.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and dried thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Stir well and simmer for a few minutes.
- Toast the hamburger buns. Spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun.
- Top the beef with shredded Swiss cheese. Broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
- The key to great flavor is cooking the onions low and slow.
- Toasting the buns prevents them from getting soggy.
- Season your dish in layers as you go for the best flavor.
- For easy cleanup, use a non-stick skillet or a Dutch oven.
